<taxonomicName id="8CEB3D9C439F245518326A6FAC33FDCB" genus="Mygalomorphae" lsidName="Mygalomorphae paloma" pageId="193" pageNumber="194" rank="species" species="paloma">paloma</taxonomicName>
species group and can be identified by a combination of morphological, molecular, and geographic characteristics. Nuclear and mitochondrial DNA identifies
<taxonomicName id="9CF268DAAE843A17FA0ECEE9685AD45F" class="Arachnida" family="Theraphosidae" genus="Aphonopelma" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Aphonopelma paloma" order="Araneae" pageId="193" pageNumber="194" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="species" species="paloma">Aphonopelma paloma</taxonomicName>
as a strongly supported monophyletic lineage (Figs 7-8) supported as the sister lineage to all other members of the
<taxonomicName id="6EF0AB3A118B6D0093A5A6BDE41DA3FB" genus="Mygalomorphae" lsidName="Mygalomorphae paloma" pageId="193" pageNumber="194" rank="species" species="paloma">paloma</taxonomicName>
species group.
<taxonomicName id="100E70C2B8A1E98F7B19DE8098CC2AFF" class="Arachnida" family="Theraphosidae" genus="Aphonopelma" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Aphonopelma paloma" order="Araneae" pageId="193" pageNumber="194" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="species" species="paloma">Aphonopelma paloma</taxonomicName>
is the smallest species in the United States (Fig. 106) and can easily be differentiated from syntopic species by its
<pageBreakToken id="6FA20759B08C86F547149869E68202D5" pageId="194" pageNumber="195" start="start">much</pageBreakToken>
smaller size and reduced extent of scopulation on metatarsi III and IV; it can be distinguished from other members of the
<taxonomicName id="570805214D5737F2365D5B0D57F93568" genus="Mygalomorphae" lsidName="Mygalomorphae paloma" pageId="194" pageNumber="195" rank="species" species="paloma">paloma</taxonomicName>
species group by locality. The most significant measurements that distinguish male
<taxonomicName id="75AFA0388ECEFA1DEDC0B8EA32B26247" class="Arachnida" family="Theraphosidae" genus="Aphonopelma" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Aphonopelma paloma" order="Araneae" pageId="194" pageNumber="195" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="species" species="paloma">Aphonopelma paloma</taxonomicName>
from its closely related phylogenetic and syntopic species are M1 and the extent of scopulation of metatarsus III. Male

can be distinguished by possessing a larger M1/T3 (≥1.11; 1.11-1.16) than
