Diagnosis. This species group is defined by the following suite of characters: an angular gill slit; presence of a shallow subopercular groove, which extends to the pectoral fin origin; absence of scales on belly; absence of a secondary rostrum; absence of a postoral pouch; and presence of brightly coloured fins in life.

is characterized by yellow dorsal, anal and caudal fins, and reddish top and bottom margins to the caudal fin.
