Originally distributed in the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean and the North Pacific; commonly reported from locations throughout the Mediterranean (

). The first Mediterranean record of
<taxonomicName id="8415E00607814BAB2B3CB66770E2A1D9" class="Polychaeta" family="Maldanidae" genus="Metasychis" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Metasychis gotoi" pageId="0" pageNumber="20997" phylum="Annelida" rank="species" species="gotoi">Metasychis gotoi</taxonomicName>
is from the Northern Adriatic (Fauvel 1940), constituting one of the earliest records of non-native species in the basin. As
<taxonomicName id="2692363DDEC6C727AC1EA1DA19C680C9" class="Polychaeta" family="Maldanidae" genus="Metasychis" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Metasychis gotoi" pageId="0" pageNumber="20997" phylum="Annelida" rank="species" species="gotoi">Metasychis gotoi</taxonomicName>
is reported from worldwide distributions, it is likely that the name refers to a complex of cryptic species. The Mediterranean material could belong to an overlooked native species (J. Langeneck, pers. comm.).
