<taxonomicName class="Insecta" family="Staphylinidae" genus="Acrotona" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Acrotona smithi" order="Coleoptera" pageId="22" pageNumber="141" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="species" species="smithi">Acrotona smithi</taxonomicName>
is newly recorded in Canada based on numerous collections across Ontario. Ontario material was compared with the type series of
<taxonomicName class="Insecta" family="Staphylinidae" genus="Acrotona" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Acrotona smithi" order="Coleoptera" pageId="22" pageNumber="141" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="species" species="smithi">Acrotona smithi</taxonomicName>
from New York. This species is easily recognized amongst other northeastern
<taxonomicName class="Insecta" family="Staphylinidae" genus="Acrotona" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Acrotona" order="Coleoptera" pageId="22" pageNumber="141" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="genus">Acrotona</taxonomicName>
by the large and fusiform body (
<taxonomicName class="Insecta" family="Staphylinidae" genus="Oxypoda" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Oxypoda" order="Coleoptera" pageId="22" pageNumber="141" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="genus">Oxypoda</taxonomicName>
-like habitus), the distinctive shape of the aedeagus in lateral view (Figs 117-118), the broadly and shallowly emarginate female tergite VIII (Fig. 123), and, despite some variation, the general shape of the spermatheca (Figs 121-122).

appears to be a common species inhabiting deciduous to mixed forests and semi-open habitat (e.g. oak savannah) and is probably broadly distributed across northeastern North America.
