This species can be easily diagnosed by the reddish brown zigzag markings on the forewings. It is a well-known pest of agriculture, and as a vector of rice orange leaf disease, rice tungro bacilliform virus disease, rice dwarf virus disease and rice tungro spherical virus disease.
