1975: 232). Etymology. The specific name was proposed for Alfonse Forrer [1836-1899], a collector of natural history objects. Born in London, Forrer moved to the United States while a young man and, at the close of the civil war, accepted a commission from the British Museum to collect zoological material along the west coast of the United States and Mexico. He supplied many other European museums with his material and also collected for Salvin and Godman. In July 1900, his personal collection, consisting mainly of fishes, birds, and insects, was offered for sale for $500 by his widow.
