The composite epithet of the generic name,

, is a combination of the Latin word
<emphasis italics="true" pageId="0" pageNumber="1">exilis</emphasis>
and the generic name of
<emphasis italics="true" pageId="0" pageNumber="1">Photis</emphasis>
. This name refers to slender and elongate pereopods 5-7 with a noticeably narrower basis than those of other photid species. Gender is feminine.
