The species is named for Dr Michael E. Irwin, Emeritus Professor, Department of Entomology, University of Illinois, who collected the

. It recognises his long and distinguished career and his contribution to Afrotropical dipterology, in particular the taxonomy and systematics of lower Brachycera.
