The taxonomic rank and delineation of
<taxonomicName class="Insecta" family="Chrysididae" genus="Philoctetes" higherTaxonomySource="GBIF" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Philoctetes" order="Hymenoptera" pageId="17" pageNumber="18" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="genus">Philoctetes</taxonomicName>
has differed among several authors. We follow the definition given by
<bibRefCitation author="Kimsey, LS" journalOrPublisher="Oxford Press, New York" pageId="94" pageNumber="95" title="[1990] The Chrysidid Wasps of the World." year="1991">Kimsey and Bohart (1991)</bibRefCitation>
and consider it as a distinct genus.
<taxonomicName class="Insecta" family="Chrysididae" genus="Philoctetes" higherTaxonomySource="GBIF" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Philoctetes" order="Hymenoptera" pageId="17" pageNumber="18" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="genus">Philoctetes</taxonomicName>
is characterised by the following diagnostic features: mesoscutum with large punctures concentrated along notauli; central malar space without carina; mesopleuron rounded and weakly projecting ventrally; metascutellum usually conical; posterior margin of T3 usually deeply notched medially. The hosts consist of crabronid wasps of the subfamily
<taxonomicName lsidName="" pageId="17" pageNumber="18" rank="subfamily" subfamily="Pemphredoninae">Pemphredoninae</taxonomicName>
. Approximately 40 species are recognised worldwide, and about 30 of these are Palearctic (

). A total of 22 species are known from Europe (

), but only

is found in the Nordic and Baltic countries (
