, the closest if not identical species of

by the much wider and stronger dorsal tibial apophysis and the much shorter ventral tibial apophysis (cf.

and Logunov, 1999: figs. 78); females of both species are very close and almost indistinguishable by the conformation of their copulatory organs.

A series of 2d and 2♀ of

collected together from SW Iran allowed me to provide a di

erential diagnosis of this species from
<emphasis box="[555,684,1821,1844]" italics="true" pageId="4" pageNumber="89">P. picaceus</emphasis>
, from which it di

ers in having a slightly shorter ventral tibial apophysis, a notched dorsal tibial apophysis (arrowed in

Thus, in my opinion,

is distinct from the true
<emphasis box="[224,353,2076,2100]" italics="true" pageId="4" pageNumber="89">P. picaceus</emphasis>
. The distribution of both species, particularly in Asia Minor and the Near East, needs to be further clarified when more material becomes available.

is quite common in Greece and Turkey (Metzner, 1999; Logunov, unpubl. data), whereas

remains known only from a few localities in Israel and Iran (Logunov
<emphasis box="[1324,1375,1181,1206]" italics="true" pageId="4" pageNumber="89">et al</emphasis>
., 2002; Prószyński, 2003; present data). Incidentally, the male of
<emphasis box="[822,977,1245,1269]" italics="true" pageId="4" pageNumber="89">P. courtauldi</emphasis>
reported from the Greek islands and illustrated by Metzner (1999: figs. 56ac) almost certainly belongs to
<emphasis box="[1025,1210,1309,1333]" italics="true" pageId="4" pageNumber="89">P. palaestinensis</emphasis>
. This matter requires further attention in the future.
