Originally described as a
<taxonomicName id="CC2E2B109D2156E94B71AB6AB7D4D507" class="Insecta" family="Geometridae" genus="Heterusia" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Heterusia" order="Lepidoptera" pageId="13" pageNumber="144" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="genus">Heterusia</taxonomicName>
species by Schaus (1901), this taxon was down-ranked as a subspecies of
<taxonomicName id="D5DF1A867F477B9F7D6717408A104C70" lsidName="mortipax" pageId="13" pageNumber="144" rank="species" species="mortipax">mortipax</taxonomicName>
by Parsons et al. (1999). In my view, the significantly different wing pattern in
<taxonomicName id="04D18C54F5F59AF98D1D35C02E9E90D6" lsidName="jamaicensis" pageId="13" pageNumber="144" rank="species" species="jamaicensis">jamaicensis</taxonomicName>
justifies
<normalizedToken id="955A3089277DCCEB5FAC9A1C465F2641" originalValue="Schaus">Schaus'</normalizedToken>
original species rank, but further evidence from barcoding is desirable in order to consolidate its species status.

In contrast to the other taxa in the

clade, this species displays a very narrow, cream-white transversal band on the forewings. The striation on the underside of the hindwing is reduced in comparison to
