Massive, sub-massive, encrusting or branching colonies. Maximum recorded size up to 1 m across, except for some colonies that become hemispherical to helmed-shaped and can be several metres across. Branching colonies have stubby branches with pale tips. Corallites are very small, 0.6 to 1.3 mm and a close-up or a high-resolution camera is needed to distinguish them underwater; the surface of the colony is smooth, giving the coral an almost rock-like appearance.
