). As demonstrated by

after exclusion of the taxa reticulatus and timoriensis (see

), the genus

forms a monophyletic grouping, including the taxon brongersmai. Since

demonstrated that brongersmai is the sister taxon to curtus and breitensteini, separating these three taxa from the genus
<taxonomicName id="54ECD96A237957EF08FF8E97860DCF0F" class="Squamata" family="Pythonidae" genus="Python" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Python" pageId="9" pageNumber="38" phylum="Chordata" rank="genus">Python</taxonomicName>
would result in the non-monophyly of the genus. It is our opinion that the recognition of

at subgeneric rank only causes confusion and is unnecessary in a low-diversity genus as
<taxonomicName id="CA1DC39E6E2CD6157023A0BF405D8A60" class="Squamata" family="Pythonidae" genus="Python" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Python" pageId="9" pageNumber="38" phylum="Chordata" rank="genus">Python</taxonomicName>
