The genus was defined by

on the basis of the following characters: fore wing with two or, more frequently, more dorsal setae on the submarginal vein and postmarginal vein absent or rudimentary; antenna with 2–4 discoid or laminar anelli, funicle 3-segmented in females and 4-segmented in males, the male scape with a large plaque, and club most often 3-segmented; anterior margin of the clypeus bidentate; mandibles tridentate; malar sulcus present, straight or weakly curved; notauli complete, each with a single row of adnotaular setae; scutellum with two pairs of setae and two pairs of longitudinal lines; propodeum with median carina, lacking plicae and paraspiracular carinae, and propodeal callus with a raised lobe partially overhanging outer spiracular rim; cercal setae conspicuously unequal in length, with one markedly longer than the others and typically sinuate or curved.
