It has a marked polymorphism in chromatic patterns and colony shapes, and the long list of synonymies reported (e.g., Van Name 1945, Berrill 1950, Kott 1985) bears testimony of the convoluted taxonomical history of

2012). The two mtDNA sequences obtained in this study correspond to Clade A in Bock
<emphasis id="B915E350FF96FFBCFD16B09EFCC23776" box="[758,815,1768,1792]" italics="true" pageId="15" pageNumber="166">et al.</emphasis>
(2012), the most widespread and common but, in turn, subject to ongoing speciation processes (Griggio
<emphasis id="B915E350FF96FFBCFD5DB17AFD183753" box="[701,757,1805,1829]" italics="true" pageId="15" pageNumber="166">et al.</emphasis>
2014).
