Two species of
<taxonomicName box="[262,352,218,240]" class="Actinopterygii" family="Cyprinidae" genus="Alburnus" kingdom="Animalia" order="Cypriniformes" pageId="123" pageNumber="126" phylum="Chordata" rank="genus">Alburnus</taxonomicName>
are known from the perialpine region investigated in Projet Lac:
<taxonomicName authority="alburnus" box="[984,1164,218,240]" class="Actinopterygii" family="Cyprinidae" genus="Alburnus" kingdom="Animalia" order="Cypriniformes" pageId="123" pageNumber="126" phylum="Chordata" rank="species" species="alburnus">Alburnus alburnus</taxonomicName>
from Rhine and Rhone catchments, and
<taxonomicName authorityName=", Bonaparte" authorityYear="1841" box="[473,656,250,272]" class="Actinopterygii" family="Cyprinidae" genus="Alburnus" kingdom="Animalia" order="Cypriniformes" pageId="123" pageNumber="126" phylum="Chordata" rank="species" species="arborella">Alburnus arborella</taxonomicName>
from the Adriatic catchment. It is noteworthy that both species were recorded exclusively within their expected native range.The population of

from Lake Lugano was originally described as Alborella
<taxonomicName authority=", Fatio 1882" authorityName=", Fatio" authorityYear="1882" box="[612,811,314,336]" class="Actinopterygii" family="Cyprinidae" genus="Alburnus" kingdom="Animalia" order="Cypriniformes" pageId="123" pageNumber="126" phylum="Chordata" rank="species" species="maxima">maxima, Fatio 1882</taxonomicName>
, considered distinctively larger than
<taxonomicName authority=", Bonaparte 1841" authorityName=", Bonaparte" authorityYear="1841" class="Actinopterygii" family="Cyprinidae" genus="Alburnus" kingdom="Animalia" order="Cypriniformes" pageId="123" pageNumber="126" phylum="Chordata" rank="species" species="arborella">A. arborella, Bonaparte 1841</taxonomicName>
. Buj et al. [146] found that the Lugano population grew indeed much larger than other
<taxonomicName authorityName=", Bonaparte" authorityYear="1841" box="[112,226,378,400]" class="Actinopterygii" family="Cyprinidae" genus="Alburnus" kingdom="Animalia" order="Cypriniformes" pageId="123" pageNumber="126" phylum="Chordata" rank="species" species="arborella">A. arborella</taxonomicName>
and was also meristically distinct. However, because those authors studied East Adriatic
<taxonomicName box="[1128,1218,378,400]" class="Actinopterygii" family="Cyprinidae" genus="Alburnus" kingdom="Animalia" order="Cypriniformes" pageId="123" pageNumber="126" phylum="Chordata" rank="genus">Alburnus</taxonomicName>
populations plus the Lugano population, but did not include populations from the lakes between these regions, it is difficult to interprete their findings with regard to the status of the Lugano population. Currently, Alborella
<taxonomicName authorityName=", Fatio" authorityYear="1882" box="[113,193,474,496]" class="Actinopterygii" family="Cyprinidae" genus="Alburnus" kingdom="Animalia" order="Cypriniformes" pageId="123" pageNumber="126" phylum="Chordata" rank="species" species="maxima">maxima</taxonomicName>
is considered a synonym of
