). Observations of living material reveal that these limbs have a locomotory function, pushing against sediment on the postero-dorsal side of the animal. The caudal rami, in contrast, are reduced, and appear not to be able to protrude to any significant degree from the carapace, and therefore probably have little or no locomotory function.
