Upper part: name bearing types of two nominal species of Platypelis described from the Tsaratanana Massif, Platypelis alticola (originally described as Platyhyla alticola) and P. tsaratananaensis, in dorsal view. The right inset pictures show the hand (above) and foot of the P. tsaratananaensis holotype in ventral view. Lower part: Ventral views of hands and feet (not to scale) of male and female specimens of Platypelis tsaratananaensis in comparison with the morphologically similar P. pollicaris. Note that in both species, males have a larger prepollex (prepollical tubercle) than females, but the male prepollex is much more strongly expressed in P. pollicaris. Furthermore the third toe is distinctly shorter than the fifth toe in P. tsaratananaensis. Note that the apparently reduced first toe in P. tsaratananaensis is due to it being partly overlain by the second toe in the photograph which was taken so that the third and fifth toes are at the same level." httpUri="https://zenodo.org/record/215398/files/figure.png" pageId="4" pageNumber="5">Fig. 2</figureCitation>

emits series of tonal single-note calls at night, with regular intervals between notes. Calls were typically emitted from relatively high positions in dense bamboo thicket, and calling males were thus difficult to locate. A single male specimen (ZSM 1657/2010 = ZCMV 12453) was seen calling and collected by T. Rajoafiarison (between

Hz, with a dominant frequency of 1894 Hz (all other notes recorded from this specimen had very similar frequency ranges). Characterizing a fundamental frequency in such a tonal note is difficult, but tentatively the lowest observed frequency (1765 Hz) might be considered as fundamental. Temporal call parameters were as follows: note length of single notes 411–466 milliseconds (445±26; N= 4); interval between two notes 3790–3913 milliseconds (3867±67; N= 3) (
