Such fracture caves parallel the submerged escarpment that marks the edge of the shallow water platform. They are believed to have formed by slumping of the exposed bank margin during glacial periods of lowered sea level in the Pleistocene. Such caves have strong, tidally reversing currents that allow divers to enter only at slack tide when the currents are in the process of changing direction.
