Les colonies de cette espèce sont fréquentes dans les lacs marins de

avec des couleurs très variables, jaune ou noir, toutes les colonies deviennent très sombres après fixation.Les lobes, dressés sur une base commune (

. Les thorax sont gonflés et donnent une image de « bulles» en surface des colonies, ce qui obscurcit la disposition en systèmes circulaires autour dune dépression centrale. La tunique ne contient un peu de sédiment que dans la couche basale, les lobes en sont dépourvus. Les cellules pigmentaires ne sont présentes que dans la tunique, les zoïdes sont incolores.

le thorax les fibres musculaires sont régulièrement espacées, les fibres transverses sont plus nombreuses que les fibres longitudinales.

labdomen les 2 rubans musculaires se terminent en boutons saillants à lextrémité du corps. Les tentacules buccaux sont disposés en 3 cercles. Un large espace imperforé est antérieur à la branchie. La branchie compte au moins 20 stigmates de chaque côté dans le premier rang un peu relevé.

Labdomen est renflé dans sa partie postérieure (

). Lestomac est ovale suivi dun postestomac étroit. Lintestin moyen est nettement isolé par des étranglements. Lintestin postérieur débute au fond de la boucle par un élargissement. La boucle digestive est droite. Lanus souvre au niveau du deuxième rang de stigmates. Les lobules testiculaires arrondis sont très nombreux et sétendent en avant de lestomac (

Les embryons sont incubés tout le long de loviducte, dans labdomen (

). Les larves, en fin de développement, se trouvent encore dans labdomen, sous le thorax. Elles mesurent

pour le tronc. La queue décrit à peine un demi-tour. Ocelle, otolithe et 2 rangs de stigmates sont visibles. Les 3 papilles adhésives ne sont pas équidistantes, quel que soit le nombre de vésicules intermédiaires. Ces dernières varient en nombre et en longueur selon les larves dune même colonie (

). Les vésicules sont impaires: 1 à 3 dorsales, 1 à 2 entre les papilles adhésives, 3 à 5 entre les 2 papilles suivantes et 1 vésicule ou 1 rangée ventrale. Quelques éléments filiformes sont intercalés. On trouve aussi des larves à 2 ou 4 papilles adhésives avec une fréquence qui laisse supposer une action de la dessalure du milieu. En effet les animaux vivent très près de la surface de leau dont la salinité atteint 25 à 27 ‰. Dans lune des colonies fixées les larves étaient rouges, couleur qui a rapidement disparu, et qui est peut-être la couleur des larves vivantes.
