These are the well­known “honeypot ants”, whose colonies include a subgroup of specialized workers (repletes) devoted to storage of liquid food in their swollen abdomens. Species of
<emphasis id="24F7CA20FFCBFFC8FEEAFEE6C650FE88" box="[349,520,284,309]" italics="true" pageId="29" pageNumber="30">Myrmecocytus</emphasis>
are restricted to the western
<collectingCountry id="6E9456A2FFCBFFC8FCEAFEE6C7A2FE8B" box="[861,1018,284,310]" name="United States of America" pageId="29" pageNumber="30">United States</collectingCountry>
and northern
<collectingCountry id="6E9456A2FFCBFFC8FB28FEE6C0A0FE8B" box="[1183,1272,284,310]" name="Mexico" pageId="29" pageNumber="30">Mexico</collectingCountry>
and are found primarily in desert habitats. Snellings (1976) landmark revision of the genus also contains much useful biological information.
