The true flies belong to one of the largest insect orders,
<taxonomicName id="D6944D7AFFC2FF9BD579FC12FCBD2858" box="[778,868,1011,1037]" kingdom="Plantae" order="Diptera" pageId="10" pageNumber="129" rank="order">Diptera</taxonomicName>
, which is subdivided into several suborders, the most substantial of which is the Brachycera or short-horned flies. This suborder contains more than 120 separate families that exhibit a wide range of behaviour and life histories. One of the smallest and least well known of these families is the
<taxonomicName id="D6944D7AFFC2FF9BD75FFB61FE5628CF" box="[300,399,1152,1178]" class="Insecta" family="Mydidae" kingdom="Animalia" order="Diptera" pageId="10" pageNumber="129" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="family">Mydidae</taxonomicName>
which contains about 400 species of mydas flies, including the largest of all described
<taxonomicName id="D6944D7AFFC2FF9BD7FFFB42FE3F28E8" box="[396,486,1187,1213]" kingdom="Plantae" order="Diptera" pageId="10" pageNumber="129" rank="order">Diptera</taxonomicName>
,

. The other members of the family are also relatively large insects, usually over one cm in length and many are mimics of stinging Hymenoptera (

). Whilst these flies are cosmopolitan in their distribution, they are more frequent in arid and semi-arid terrain, but are not often collected making them rare even in large institutional collections. The family has hitherto not been recorded from the
<collectingCountry id="69837669FFC2FF9BD458FAB5FDBE293B" box="[555,615,1364,1390]" name="United Arab Emirates" pageId="10" pageNumber="129">UAE</collectingCountry>
, but two unidentified species were recorded by BH within the emirates of

and

, with a further sighting from
