This new species is most closely related to

, from which it differs particularly at the level of male clypeus, but also in aedeagal parameres, extent of light-yellow ornamentation and shape of mesometasternal process (

). In fact, its frontal horn actually takes the shape of a tapering ridge, rather than a true laminar horn, as is the case in the male of

This species is named after Dr Thierry Garnier (Montpellier,

) who brought the
<typeStatus id="C522880BFFD7FFB4FD7CF0BEFD23F92D" box="[662,755,1748,1772]" pageId="3" pageNumber="360" type="holotype">holotype</typeStatus>
specimen to my attention, believing that it represented an undescribed taxon. Dr Garnier has made a remarkable contribution to the knowledge of African cetoniines and other beetles through his support for research in this area and his regular collecting expeditions to the continent.
