In all cases a normal, dealate queen also was present in the nest. None of the intermediates observed was winged and it seems likely that they are either entirely wingless or brachypterous. Scanning electron micrographs of the lateral mesosoma (Figures 25 C and D) show the presence of a rudimentary suture above the mesopleuron where in a normal queen the forewing attaches.
