Most of the California species formerly placed in

have now been assigned to
<taxonomicName id="CA051C67FA6D5D74D4BEC7C04A05A388" LSID-HNS="urn:lsid:biosci.ohio-state.edu:osuc_concepts:147258" authority="Mayr, 1861" authorityName="Mayr" authorityYear="1861" class="Hexapoda" family="Formicidae" genus="Temnothorax" higherTaxonomySource="GBIF" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName-HNS="Temnothorax Mayr" order="Hymenoptera" pageNumber="37" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="genus">Temnothorax</taxonomicName>
(Bolton 2003). With at least twenty species in California, this is a diverse group showing wide variation in habitat and nest-site preferences. About a third of the species are arboreal. Most species appear to be generalist scavengers.
