Fries (1939: 483) indicated the specimen A. Ducke HJBR 17874 as “Typus speciei” of G. scandens. However, the sheet with this number comprises two specimens with distinct dates (10 November 1922,
<emphasis id="ABA4FE148E786D2BFA86705E7C9F5A49" italics="true" pageId="3" pageNumber="52">fruit black,</emphasis>
and 10 May 1923, flower green). However this cannot be treated as a single specimen, as its parts were collected at different times (Art. 8.2 of the ICNB, McNeill et al. 2006); consequently Fries’s statement does not
<emphasis id="ABA4FE148E786D2BFF2870EA7D7D5A94" box="[199,319,925,951]" italics="true" pageId="3" pageNumber="52">constitute</emphasis>
an effective lectotypification, even as a first stage lectotypification. We have selected as lectotype the other specimen cited in the protologue by Ducke (1925).
