<taxonomicName class="Mammalia" family="Didelphidae" genus="Cryptonanus" higherTaxonomySource="GBIF" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Cryptonanus agricolai" order="Didelphimorphia" pageId="3" pageNumber="108" phylum="Chordata" rank="species" species="agricolai">Cryptonanus agricolai</taxonomicName>
is endemic to the Cerrado and the Caatinga, and has also been collected in contact zones between these biomes and the Amazon in northern Mato Grosso and southwestern

states (

). Records of
<taxonomicName class="Mammalia" family="Didelphidae" genus="Cryptonanus" higherTaxonomySource="GBIF" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Cryptonanus agricolai" order="Didelphimorphia" pageId="3" pageNumber="108" phylum="Chordata" rank="species" species="agricolai">Cryptonanus agricolai</taxonomicName>
in the Atlantic forest were obtained from pellets of
<taxonomicName class="Aves" family="Tytonidae" genus="Tyto" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Tyto alba" order="Strigiformes" pageId="3" pageNumber="108" phylum="Chordata" rank="species" species="alba">Tyto alba</taxonomicName>
and might actually correspond to individuals captured in the Cerrado, the Caatinga, or both (
<bibRefCitation author="Souza, DP" pageId="42" pageNumber="147" url="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.mambio.2009.08.003" year="2010">Souza et al. 2010</bibRefCitation>
), as these owls can potentially forage through long distances (up to ~31 km;
<bibRefCitation author="Hegdal, PL" pageId="36" pageNumber="141" url="https://doi.org/10.1002/etc.5620030119" year="1984">Hegdal and Blaskiewicz 1984</bibRefCitation>
). According to

, unpublished molecular data suggest that
<taxonomicName class="Mammalia" family="Didelphidae" genus="Cryptonanus" higherTaxonomySource="GBIF" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Cryptonanus agricolai" order="Didelphimorphia" pageId="3" pageNumber="108" phylum="Chordata" rank="species" species="agricolai">Cryptonanus agricolai</taxonomicName>
is absent from the Cerrado; however, we will refrain from adopting this view until these data become publicly available (contra
<bibRefCitation author="Carmignotto, AP" pageId="33" pageNumber="138" url="https://doi.org/10.7208/chicago/9780226649214.003.0010" year="2012">Carmignotto et al. 2012</bibRefCitation>
). The current, known distribution of
<taxonomicName class="Mammalia" family="Didelphidae" genus="Cryptonanus" higherTaxonomySource="GBIF" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Cryptonanus agricolai" order="Didelphimorphia" pageId="3" pageNumber="108" phylum="Chordata" rank="species" species="agricolai">Cryptonanus agricolai</taxonomicName>
includes the Brazilian states of
