Van Dyke, 1925: 115. Type locality: "base of Lyell Glacier (about 11,500 feet), M[oun]t Lyell, California" (original citation). Holotype (♂) in CAS [# 1619]. Etymology. The species name honors James John Rivers [1824-1913], a naturalist born in England who studied medicine at the University of London and came under the influence of Thomas Henry Huxley. In his 40s he moved to the United States and eventually settled in California. Curator of Organic Natural History at the University of California (Berkeley), Rivers published on many subjects, including
