Distribution. All zoogeographic regions. Remarks. The concept of the family Hygrobatidae has undergone considerable revision recently to accommodate numerous new genera as knowledge of the fauna of the Southern Hemisphere has increased ( Cook 1980 , 1986 , 1988 ). Adults and known larvae of North American genera can be identified using the keys by Smith et al . (2001) .
