Distinguishing sectional characters.
Staminate flowers
with a pistillode, stamens arranged into four (rarely two) strap-shaped fascicles each with a single row of sessile, recurved, and sometimes multilocellate anthers at the end. Ovaries four locular, stigmas weakly lobed.
Fruits
with smooth surface.
Inflorescences
terminal or axillary with one to a few flowers. Afrotropics.
