Three genera and 21 species. Distribution. North America from southern Alaska southward to southern Baja California, and east of the Rocky Mountains from Hudson Bay to the Gulf of Mexico . Etymology. The familial name is based on that of the type genus, the Greek akris, meaning a kind of grasshopper.
