Primno latreillei
Stebbing
Primno latreillei
Stebbing, 1888: 1445–1447
, pl.179A.
Type
material
The
three syntypes
of
P. latreillei
are in the
BMNH
(89.5.15.243): on four microscope slides
.
Remarks
This is one of the smaller species of
Primno
, with adults reaching only
6–10mm
in length. It is very similar to
P. johnsoni
, and
Vinogradov
et al
. (1982)
regard
P. johnsoni
as a junior synonym of
P. latreillei
. Amongst the Australian material examined (
Zeidler 1992a
, 1998) there was considerable variation in the relative length of the basis of pereopod 7 compared to the remaining articles combined, ranging from slightly longer to about twice as long. This brings the specimens within the morphological range of
P. johnsoni
, which is probably synonymous with
P. latreillei
. The morphological variation found in pereopod 7 appears to be ontogenetic.
Primno latreillei
seems to have a scattered distribution having been recorded from the Tasman Sea, the North Pacific Ocean (off California), the Red Sea, the eastern Mediterranean Sea and the southeastern part of the Gulf of
Guinea
.
