Characterization
.
Field Characteristics
. Pupal case elliptical to oval, black, with VO located on a promontory, a narrow ring of lateral wax not visible dorsally, six to eight low and obtuse lobate projections along the apparent margin pointing laterally located on each side of cephalothorax and abdomen, plus usually a medial one on head, and six to eight (usually seven) dorsolateral conical papillae along submargin of thorax and abdomen (
Fig. 15
).
Slide-mounted characters
(values of
holotype
in square brackets). Puparium apparent margin festooned with 5– 7 [6,
Fig. 118
] (usually 6) very low to moderately low obtuse lobate projections (
Fig. 119
); TMS extending slightly onto submargin, not reaching apparent margin, not lined with tubercles (
Figs 118–120
); longitudinal molting suture not lined with tubercles; eyespots absent; Ce setae absent; T2 and T3 setae present, long and flattened, arising from bulbous bases, T3 setae arising just behind anterior margin of metanotum (
Figs 118–120
); medial area smooth, lacking tubercles (
Figs 118
,
119
); abdominal depressions conspicuous (
Figs 118
,
119
,
122
); with two pores on each side of submedial area of head; lacking pores on medial area of thorax and abdomen; sides of dorsal disc smooth, with row of pores along sides of submargin; dorsal submargin smooth, with 6–8 [7] (usually 7) conical membranous papillae on each side on thorax and abdomen, plus usually one on center of head submargin (
Figs 118–120
), with pores and porettes, some of which are adjacent to the papillae (
Fig. 120
); deflexed submargin with a row of pores, and with dark granulations arranged in 1–3 clusters in transverse rows along basal portion adjacent to marginal teeth (
Figs 125, 126
); marginal glandular teeth subquadrangular with tips smooth; VO oval, inset from posterior margin by more than its own length; operculum cordate, its dorsal surface with a few longitudinal ridges and with microspinulae across distal third to fourth; lingula concealed by operculum; VO ring subtriangular, anteriorly wide and open (
Fig. 124
), with dorsal abdominal setae of A8 arising from bulbous bases anterior to level of anterior margin of operculum (
Fig. 124
); bases of caudal setae moderately separated, at level of lateral margins of operculum (
Fig. 124
); with five membranous ventral sacs medially to bases of mesothoracic and metathoracic legs and on center (
Fig. 121
); tegument of venter extensively covered by spinulae (
Fig. 123
).
Nymphal instars 1–3. First instar (
Fig. 265
): with 6 pairs of long submarginal setae along sides of cephalothorax and 1 pair posterior to level of VO. VO suboval, about as wide as long, with anterior margin straight; operculum subtriangular; lingula head bulbous and covered with microsetae; other characters not discernible. Second and third instars (
Figs 266, 267
): lacking long submarginal setae, with button-like structures with a central pore along margins of cephalothorax and abdomen which are separated from each other by a space subequal to two (at caudal end only) to four times the width of each structure, with conical submarginal abdominal papillae (exact number not discernible), and with VO located on a promontory.
