He cited Potentilla pentandra Engelmann as the basis for his genus (although using another epithet, making his species name illegitimate). The type is Potentilla pentandra (basionym), which is now considered to be a synonym of P. rivalis Nutt. ( Watson, 1873 ; Ertter & al., 2014) and Potentillopsis belongs to the Argentea clade .
