Chetverty Kuril Strait , North Kurile Islands , 630 m , two specimens (the carapace length including the rostrum of one of the two specimens was 7.9 mm ), probably deposited in the collections of the Zoological Institute , St. Petersburg. Not accessible . Distribution. North Kuril Islands and Kamchatka Peninsula ( Fig. 40 ); 350–630 m ( Birshtein and Vinogradov 1951 ; Zarenkov 1960 ). Remarks. No specimens referable to this species were available for this study. Metacrangon monodon appears closest to M. nipponensis in the possession of only one middorsal tooth and distinct submedian teeth on the carapace, although Birshtein & Vinogradov (1951) compared this species with M. variabilis (as Sclerocrangon ). Metacrangon monodon seems to differ from M. nipponensis in having a distinct middorsal carina on the second to fourth abdominal somites and the more strongly concave lateral margin of the antennal scale ( Birshtein & Vinogradov 1951 ). Consequently, this taxon is regarded as a valid species for the time being.
