DISTRIBUTION. — This species is widespread throughout the country, where it inhabits both savannahs and forested areas. Causus maculatus had previously been mentioned from Togo by Hughes (1978) , Roman (1984) , de Massary (1993) , Spawls & Branch (1995) , David & Ineich (1999) and Leaché et al. (2006) . However, specimens of Causus rhombeatus (Lichtenstein, 1823) were cited from Togo by Werner (1898) , Sternfeld (1908b , 1909: 24 ), Hulselmans & Verheyen (1970) and Hulselmans et al. (1970). According to the ranges of these species (see Hughes 1978 ), they should be referred to as Causus maculatus .
