Type species: Ischnogaster micans de Saussure, 1852 , by original designation. Paravespa Bell, 1936 : 803 , 806, fig. 1, as a genus. Type species: Paravespa eva Bell, 1936 [= Stenogaster eximioides Dover and Rao, 1922 ], by subsequent designation of van der Vecht and Carpenter (1990: 44) . Junior homonym of Paravespa Radoszkowski, 1886 [ Vespidae , Eumeninae ]. Large wasps in Stenogastrinae ; body length (head + mesosoma + first two metasomal terga) 14–21 mm , forewing length more than 14 mm . Head in frontal view about as wide as high ( Figs. 26 , 41 , 46 , 52, 55 ); eyes enlarged, in lateral view swollen in ventral half (Figs. 6, 36, 42, 47, 51, 53); occipital carina reaching and fused with hypostomal carina; mandible oblong-shaped (Figs. 5, 13, 22, 25, 27, 34). Scutum with notauli present at most as traces, usually obscured by punctation; scutellum strongly convex (Figs. 37, 49), with more or less prominent, median, longitudinal carina; propodeum with very shallow, sparse punctures or smooth-surfaced; propodeal valvula large, rounded (Fig. 1). Second metasomal segment non-petiolate basally ( Fig. 30 ). Color . Body dark brown to black, with some bright-colored markings. Clypeus more or less pointed apically (Figs. 21, 26, 32, 35, 41, 52); anterior ocellus somewhat elliptical, wider than long; posterior ocellus more or less circular (Figs. 2, 9, 29, 43, 54); mandible with three teeth (Figs. 22, 27, 34). Sixth (=terminal) metasomal tergum with tubercle or spine (Figs. 4, 12, 28, 50). Male . Antenna with terminal flagellomere conical. Length of second maxillary palpomere longer than that of third to sixth palpomeres combined. Metasomal terga with tubercle or spine absent. Genitalia: Parameral spines tapering apically ( Fig. 59 A); aedeagus slender, in lateral view slightly dilated apically ( Fig. 59 B–M), laterobasally with a pair of projections; volsella longer than wide, bent at anterior margin, with beak-shaped digitus ( Fig. 59 N–Y).
