Discussion: Osgood (1946) suggested that this taxon was distinct at the subgeneric level ( Haptomys ) and sequence analysis is consistant with that suggestion ( Lessa and Cook, 1998 ). Karyotype has 2n=36 and FN=68 ( Cook et al., 1990 ).
