TYPE LOCALITY: “ Insulae S. Sebastiani [ San Sebastian Island ( Brazil )]” . TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂ , syntype ( MRSN : Box 1755): Asilus Lin. barbiventris mihi, Ins . S. Sebast. Gené / holotype Protacanthus ( Proceritosia ) barbiventris (Rdi) , N. Papavero det. [19]72 / Asilus barbiventris Rond. 1850: 185 , Ins . S. Seb. CURRENT STATUS: valid species, unplaced to genus of Asilidae ( Martin & Papavero 1970: 88 ) ; valid species, as Taurhynchus barbiventris ( Papavero 2009: 55 ) . REMARKS: Rondani (1850c: 187) described Asilus barbiventris from just the male sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length, from material received from E. Truqui. Nelson Papavero examined the MRSN material in 1972 and labeled the single male as “ holotype ” but, as far as we know, he never indicated this specimen as the holotype in any of his publication. We consider it as a syntype because Rondani did not specify he had a single specimen.
