TYPE LOCALITY: Rondani gave no type locality in his original description. Guiglia (1957: 195) gave “ Alpi occidental. [= western Alps ]” as the type locality probably because the species was collected by Ghiliani on Rupicapra rupicapra (Linnaeus, 1758) , which is present on the Alps . TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀ , holotype ( MSNG ): Antilope rupicapra D. Ghiliani / Typus / rupicaprinus Rndn. / Melophagus rupicaprinus Rndn. , Typus! REMARKS: Rondani (1879: 12) described Melophagus rupicaprinus from a single specimen: “ Exemplar unicum observavi [I observed a single specimen]”. Guiglia (1957: 196) and Raineri & Rey (1996: 34) reported the holotype ( ) in the MSNG.
