TYPE LOCALITY: “ Chiliae [ Chile ]” . TYPE MATERIAL: not found in this study. CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Acrophthalmyda sphenoptera (Loew, 1855) ( Evenhuis & Greathead 1999: 81 , 2015: 89 ). REMARKS: Rondani (1863: 68) described Bombylisoma decorata , without specifying either the number or the sex of the specimens, but giving a single measurement of length, from material received from R.A. Philippi. Rondani (1863: 2) indicated the type series as in the MZUN. Costa (1866: 37) listed a single specimen numbered “845”. Painter & Painter (1974: 8) reported for this nominal species a bare pin in the MZUN with three labels: “Museo Zoologia”, “M.° Zool. N.° 11095” and “ Bombylisoma decorata Rondani , Chili [= Chile ]”. Evenhuis & Greathead (1999: 81) followed Painter & Painter (1974: 8) in reporting the type as being destroyed. We were unable to locate any type material of this nominal species in our study.
