TYPE LOCALITY: “ in agro parmensi ” [ Parmese territory ( Italy )]” . TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂ , syntype ( MZUF : Box 13): Exorista Mgn. / gnava ♂ / 635. CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Carcelia bombylans Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 ( Herting & Dely-Draskovits 1993: 213 ). REMARKS: Rondani (1859b: 135) redescribed some males of Exorista gnava ( Meigen, 1824 ) in his collection, which did not fit well with Meigen’s description and suggested naming them Exorista vigilans . We did not find any specimens under this name. There are three males labeled “ E. gnava Mgn. ” in the MZUF, which fit Rondani’s description of Exorista vigilans : one is excluded from the type series because it is labeled “Oropa”, which is not the type locality, and one because its label is yellowish rather than the greenish color of Rondani’s original handwritten ones and is in a lower row in the Box, for which reason we treat it to be a subsequent addition. We consider the remaining male as a syntype of Exorista vigilans Rondani.
