TYPE LOCALITY: “ in Apennino parmensi [ Parmese Apennines ( Italy )]” . TYPE MATERIAL: 2 ♀♀ , syntypes (one slightly covered with mold, the other missing right fore-, left mid-, and both hind-legs) ( MZUF : Box 1): Volucella Gffr. / proxima Rnd., Apenn. [= Apennines] / 20. CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Volucella bombylans (Linnaeus, 1758) ( Peck 1988: 128 , Belcari et al. 1995a: 14 ). REMARKS: Rondani (1857: 32) described Volucella proxima without specifying the number , the sex or the length of the specimens, from material that he had collected and that he had also received from Bertè. We found two syntypes in this study.
