TYPE LOCALITY: “ Insula Bonae Fortunae ( Borneo ) , Provincia Sarawak [ Bona Fortuna Island, Sarawak Province, Borneo]” ( Rondani 1875c: 421 ). TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀ , lectotype ( MSNG ): Sarawak / Typus / alter Rond. / Chrysops alter n° 74. PARALECTOTYPE NOT EXAMINED: 1 ♀ (eaten by dermestids) ( MSNG ): Sarawak / Chrysops alter Rond. vid. Rondani ; 1 ♀ ( MSNG ): Sarawak / Chrysops alter Rond. vid. Rondani . CURRENT STATUS: valid species ( Stone 1975: 44 ). REMARKS: Rondani (1875c: 460) described Chrysops alter from just the female sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length, from material collected by G. Doria and O. Beccari. Guiglia (1957: 194) reported a “ holotype ” ( ) in the MSNG without knowing of two females in the MSNG, which bring the original type series to three specimens . In his original description Rondani did not explicitly refer to a single specimen therefore Guiglia’s “ holotype ” specimen must be considered as the lectotype (I.C.Z.N. 1999: Article 74.6). Raineri & Rey (1996: 54) also reported a single female in the MSNG. The additional two females in the MSNG not examined by Guiglia are paralectotypes .
