TYPE LOCALITY: “ Insula Bonae Fortunae ( Borneo ) , Provincia Sarawak [ Bona Fortuna Island , Sarawak Province , Borneo ]” ( Rondani 1875c: 421 ) . TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀ , holotype ( MSNG ): Sarawak / typus / variegatus Rond. / Tabanus variegatus n° 70. CURRENT STATUS: junior primary homonym of Tabanus variegatus De Geer, 1776 and senior synonym of Tabanus varicolor Ricardo, 1911 ( Stone 1975: 72 ) . REMARKS: Rondani (1875c: 458) described Tabanus variegatus from just the female sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length, from material collected by G. Doria and O. Beccari. Ricardo (1911: 172) examined the MSNG type. She proposed the new replacement name Tabanus varicolor for Tabanus variegatus , preoccupied by Fabricius (1805: 95) . Guiglia (1957: 197) and Raineri & Rey (1996: 56) reported the holotype ( ) in the MSNG.
