TYPE LOCALITY: “ Insula Bonae Fortunae ( Borneo ) , Provincia Sarawak [ Bona Fortuna Island, Sarawak Province, Borneo]” ( Rondani 1875c: 421 ). TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀ , lectotype ( MSNG ): Sarawak / Typus / fulvissimus Rond. / Tabanus fulvissimus , n° 69. PARALECTOTYPE NOT EXAMINED: 1 ♀ (in bad condition, almost completely eaten by dermestids, abdomen broken) ( MZUF : Box 71): Tabanus fulvissimus n. / Borneo, Sarawak , 1865–66, Coll. Doria / [no identification number ]. CURRENT STATUS: valid species ( Stone 1975: 59 ). REMARKS: Rondani (1875c: 458) described Tabanus fulvissimus from just the female sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length, despite there being two specimens in the type series found in this study, from material collected by G. Doria and O. Beccari. Ricardo (1911: 206) reported “Type seen in the Museum of Genoa” without knowing of an additional female in the MZUF, which brings the original type series to two specimens . Ricardo did not unambiguously indicate a single specimen as the type, therefore she did not designate a lectotype (I.C.Z.N. 1999: Article 74.6). Guiglia (1957: 197) reported the holotype ( ) in the MSNG. In his original description Rondani did not explicitly refer to a single specimen, therefore Guiglia’s “ holotype ” specimen must be considered as the lectotype (I.C.Z.N. 1999: Article 74.6). The additional female in the MZUF not examined by Ricardo or Guiglia is a paralectotype .
