TYPE LOCALITY: “ Sicilia [ Sicily ( Italy )]” . TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂ , holotype (missing head and right fore-leg, thorax partially eaten by dermestids, terminalia in a microvial pinned below specimen) ( MZUF : Box 2): Merodon Fb. Latr. / subfasciatus Rnd. , , Sicil. / 59 / Merodon cinereus Fabr. , det. Hurkmans, 1987. CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Merodon cinereus ( Fabricius, 1794 ) ( Peck 1988: 168 , Belcari et al. 1995a: 16 ). REMARKS: Rondani (1845f: 261) described Merodon subfasciatus from a single male: “ è una specie che formo sopra un solo individuo … Questo esemplare è maschio [I described this species from a single specimen … This specimen is a male]”, received from M. Spinola. The MZUF contains an additional female numbered “59” received later from L. Bellardi ( Rondani 1857: 58 ).
