TYPE LOCALITY: “ a Germania … et … prope Augustam Taurinorum [ Germany … and near Turin ( Italy )]” . TYPE MATERIAL: not found in this study. See Remarks. CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Merodon rufus Meigen, 1838 ( Peck 1988: 173 , Belcari et al. 1995a: 16 ). REMARKS: Rondani (1857: 63) described Merodon submetallicus from just the male sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens and not giving a range of lengths, from material received from Germany and L. Bellardi. We could not locate any type specimens during this study. Not included in the type series are a MZUF male and a MSNC male from “Apenn. [= Apennines]” because it is not the type locality, a female because of its sex, a MZUF male numbered “63” dated “1869”, which is subsequent to the original description, and a MSNC specimen because it is not from the type locality.
