Encarsia (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) parasitoids of Bemisia species in Taiwan (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) Author Shih, Yuan-Tung Author Ko, Chiun-Cheng Author Polaszek, Andrew text Journal of Natural History 2008 2008-12-31 42 47 - 48 2923 2941 http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/00222930802372482 journal article 10.1080/00222930802372482 1464-5262 5224449 Encarsia magnalata Shih, Ko and Polaszek sp. nov. ( Figure 3 ) Description – female Colour . Head yellow, maculated with brown especially on occiput and stemmaticum. Genae and stemmaticum closest to ocelli the darkest. Antenna uniformly yellow-brown. Mesosoma and gaster almost uniformly dark, only the mesoscutal side lobes (except a central spot), scutellum and propodeum yellow. Third valvulae brown, very dark at apices. Fore wings infuscated below marginal vein. Fore and mid-legs pale, hind legs dark. Figure 3. Encarsia magnalata Shih, Ko and Polaszek , sp. nov. Female: (A) posterior head; (B) antenna; (C) mesosoma; (D) mid-leg; (E) ovipositor; (F) fore wing. Morphology . Stemmaticum with irregular aciculate sculpture ( Figure 3A ); frons with parallel aciculate sculpture. Antennal formula 1-1-4-2, but could be interpreted as 1- 1-3-3 ( Figure 3B ). Pedicel clearly longer and larger than F1. F1 1.2 times as long as its maximum width, clearly much shorter than F2 and F3, which are approximately equal in length. Flagellum with the following numbers of longitudinal sensilla: F1: 0, F2: 3, F3: 2–3, F4: 3, F5: 4, F6: 3. Mid-lobe of mesoscutum with 10 setae ( Figure 3C ). Side lobes with three setae. Scutellar sensilla distantly placed. Distance between anterior pair of scutellar setae very slightly less than that between posterior pair. Fore wing ( Figure 3F ) 2.4 times as long as width of disc. Marginal fringe 0.16 times as long as width of disc. Submarginal vein with two setae, marginal vein anteriorly with seven to nine setae. Basal cell with two setae. Tarsal formula 5-5-5. Apical spur of mid-tibia long, almost as long as corresponding basitarsus. Tergites laterally with the following numbers of setae: T1: 0, T2: 2–4, T3: 2–3, T4: 2, T5: 3, T6: 2, T7: 4. Ovipositor longer than combined length of mid tibia and tarsus. Third valvula 0.64 times as long as second valvifer. Description – male Unknown Species group placement E. opulenta -group. Distribution Taiwan : Guangxing. Host Hemiptera : Aleyrodidae : Bemisia giffardi . Holotype , Taiwan , Sindian, Guangxing, 8 August 2005 (Y.T. Shih) ex Bemisia giffardi on Citrus grandis (NTU) . Paratypes 4 ♀ , same data as holotype ( NHM , NTU ) . Remarks Encarsia magnalata is close to E. ishii (Silvestri) , to which it keys in Huang and Polaszek (1998) . It differs from E. ishii in having the fore wing hyaline, fewer setae on the lateral gastral terga and, probably most importantly, a longer and narrower F1. Morphology of the male when found, coupled with molecular studies, will determine whether the above-mentioned morphological differences – normally reliable indicators of species differences in this genus – represent good species indicators or simply intraspecific variation.
