,
Chicharras, Chiapas, Mexico.
This species is a member of the
desmarestianus
species group along with
H. desmarestianus
,
H. nubicolens
, and
H. oresterus
. It is sister-taxon to one of potentially five cryptic species within
H. desmarestianus
. It was initially described as a species but subsumed under
H. desmarestianus
on the basis of external, cranial, and bacular morphology, and then again recognized as a distinct species based on karyotype, fixed allozymic differences, and molecular sequence distance.
Monotypic.
Distribution.
SE Mexico and SW Guatemala (heavily forested Pacific slope of Sierra Madre, 45-1860 m).
Descriptive notes.
Head-body mean 147 mm, tail mean 190 mm, ear mean 18 mm, hindfoot mean 36 mm. No specific data are available for body weight. There is no significant secondary sexual dimorphism. H. desmarestianus
).
